In mold injection processing, gate design is closely related to various factors, including the size and shape of the plastic part, mold structure, injection process conditions, and the performance of the plastic material. According to DAYIN Plastic’s insights, the gate’s cross-section should be kept small and short to increase flow speed, allow for rapid cooling and sealing, facilitate part separation, and minimize gate marks.
To improve filling and holding pressure effects, the gate should ideally be placed at the thickest part of the product. If the holding pressure is insufficient, the thinner areas will solidify faster than the thicker ones. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid placing the gate at locations where there is a significant change in thickness, as this can lead to flow hesitation or short shot defects.
Ideally, if conditions allow, it is recommended to inject plastic from the center of the product. Placing the gate centrally provides a more uniform flow path, reduces the need for higher injection pressure, and ensures even holding pressure in all directions, preventing uneven volumetric shrinkage.
When plastic flows into the runner, the material closest to the mold surface is often the first to cool and solidify. The subsequent flow primarily pushes the solidified layer forward. Although plastic has low thermal conductivity, the solid plastic forms an insulating layer, allowing the material to retain its flowability. Therefore, under ideal conditions, the gate should be placed at the cross-section of the runner to achieve optimal flow performance. This scenario typically applies to round and hexagonal runners, where the gate can be positioned centrally. However, trapezoidal runners do not allow for this, as the gate cannot be placed in the middle of the runner.
